John Edward JARRED was born in 1921 (Swaffham Q3-1921 4B:544), son of Jeremiah and Lily JARRED (née MAYES)

In the 1939 register at 3 Council Houses, Hockwold were his father [16-5-1897] a shepherd and his mother Lily M A [18-12-1891]. Also there were Frederick L WALKER [19-1-1909], a contractor's labourer and Frederick's wife Ella M [13-3-1911]. There are 3 closed records.

CWGC have his parents at South Runcton.


The 5th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment arrived in Singapore on the USS 'Mount Vernon' on the 13th January 1942. They fought until the end in the Braddell Road area of Singapore until ordered to cease fire at 1600 hours on 15th February 1942. They were taken into captivity by the Japanese Army, initially held in Changi Jail, before many were put to work on the Burma-Siam Railway. John was sent overland on 8th May 1943. Unfortunately his Japanese PoW card has not been found.

Initially buried in Kanburi Cemetery No.2, grave 261, he was moved to Kanchanaburi on 9th January 1946
